For the pleasure of the Lord
Initiation Class, Melbourne, 16th January 2010 Serving the holy name with a sankalpa for the pleasure of the Lord... is not a ritualistic performance (Padma Purana Brahma Khanda 25.15-18). There is no hidden agenda besides the pleasure of the Lord. If it is some business transaction, "O if I take initiation, then I can become president of this temple"... No, this is not ritualistic ceremony for any ulterior material benefit. Karma-kanda offers you that, and it's a short-term prayer, a short-term result-yielding activity... (It) may give immediate results - so what? In terms of our insignificant existence in this material world and the life span that we have, it is nothing in front of eternity and eternal occupation that we are going to establish as abhidheya (Catanya-caritamrta Madhya 20.124-125)... And this is the only occupation the soul will have, nothing else. And do you think it is a ritualistic activity like karma-kanda? A temporary activity, benefit-giving to the body? Mind? And ego? Some people do big, big ritualistic ceremonies just to keep up their status quo, ego. In chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra we have to smash our ego. Completely an opposite activity. How could it be a karma-kanda? His Holiness Vedavyasapriya Swami |
